Jewel of the TylerThis section provides a concise overview of the Tyler’s role as Guardian of the Lodge and an essential officer in ensuring security, dignity and smooth conduct of meetings.

  • The outer guard of the Lodge responsible for its security and privacy.
  • Ensures only properly qualified Brethren are admitted, a test may be performed.
  • Remains outside the closed door during meetings unless otherwise instructed, to lead the procession out of the lodge at the end of the meeting.
  • Works closely with the Worshipful Master, Director of Ceremonies and Inner Guard.
  • Prepares the anteroom and ensures regalia for members are available.
  • Checks the Lodge is properly tyled before opening, responding to knocks from the Inner Guard for every opening and closing.
  • Admits late arrivals only with proper authority and at appropriate moments, working with Inner Guard
  • Prepares and reassures candidates prior to ceremonies.
  • Maintains calm and order in the anteroom at all times.
  • Ensures the Lodge is secure during the meeting.
  • Often the first and last point of contact, especially with the Tyler’s toast at the festive board.

Preparing the Candidate (Cheatsheet)

Initiation

Ensure to remove all metal (belt, wallet, coins, cufflinks, collar pins, ear rings and other rings. Cover with tape if unable to remove. If candidate wears glasses, keep this safe for him and only return after the ceremony.

  • Right sleeve rolled up, showing right forearm
  • Left breast on show (fold shirt into itself to maintain)
  • Left knee on show (trouser leg rolled high enough and held up by tape if required)
  • Right heel slip shod in the slipper
  • Blind folded (second last thing you do)
  • Cable tow placed around their neck (after the blindfold is put on)
  • When ready, one loud “thwump” on the door.
  • Make sure you know their full name.

Passing

  • Left sleeve rolled up, showing left forearm
  • Left breast on show (fold shirt into itself to maintain)
  • Right knee on show (trouser leg rolled high enough and held up by tape if required) Left heel slip shod in the slipper
  • Wearing the EA apron, no gloves, no suit jacket
  • When ready, EA knocks *** on the door.
  • Make sure you know their full name.

Raising

  • Both sleeves rolled up
  • Both breasts on show
  • Both knees on show
  • Both heels slip shod
  • Wearing the FC apron, no gloves, no suit jacket
  • When ready, FC knocks * ** on the door.
  • Make sure you know their full name.
